STAY TUNED FOR SEASON 2
Hi,
We would like to introduce ourselves, William and Mary, the hands behind Big Sky Berlin Farm. Though we each have unique histories with Williamstown, there is no denying that Big Sky Berlin Farm has become the place we are rooting ourselves. We moved to our forever home on this property in the summer of 2020 and quickly became immersed in our surroundings. A motivational visit in the autumn from our friends Cris and Kelci of Island Time Farm (Shelter Island, NY) inspired us explore the idea of a flower farm. It didn’t take much convincing, however, as a couple weeks later we were out in the field preparing to spread wildflower seeds!
Since we are both new to farming, we agreed to use this first year as an experiment. We are testing out different flowers and techniques in hopes of better understanding the land and how to farm it, with a greater intention to engage with Permaculture. Our main focus this year has been utilizing no-till/low-till practices, delicately introducing new flowers to the wildly established ecosystem around us.

The land and our cutting gardens are laden with wildflowers. Seeds are sown in the autumn, with a heavy focus on native northeast species and pollinators. Additional non-native varieties of wildflowers from across the US are also being explored, increasing our range and food for pollinators. We respect our ecosystem with sustainable foraging of flora on the farm and avoid the harmful introduction of invasive species.
Rudbeckia, Aster, Yarrow, Fern, Goldenrod, Boneset, Coneflower, Joe-Pye Weed, Milkweed, Lupine, Sedge, Coreopsis, Silene, and many more.
We grow a variety of tender annuals from seed, germinating indoors, tending to the seedlings and transplanting in the spring after frosts. Many of these varieties have been grown for their drying capabilities, prolonging use and beauty into the winter months. Well-loved annuals directly sown in the spring and rows dedicated to non-hardy flowers stemming from tubers, bulbs and corms make up over half of our gardens.
Gomphrena, Starflower, Statice, Sunflower, Strawflower, Celosia, Zinnia, Cosmos, Amaranth, Daisy, Dahlia, Gladiolus and more.
We are lucky enough to have a few established perennials on the farm, planted decades ago by the previous stewards. We are also planning for the future and planting hundreds more of several herbaceous varieties this first year. These plants can take years of patience to produce bouquet worthy blooms and we can’t wait to watch the progression!
Hydrangea, Lilac, Peony, Iris, Allium, Eryngium, Monarda, Echinops, Astrantia, Cardoon, Eremurus and more.
